Since early 2014, this site has essentially been on hiatus. It was abrupt, it was long-lasting, and it was something I am very sorry to have done. For some of you (filmmakers, writers, directors, and partner organizations) with whom I had an agreement to publish an interview, to conduct an interview, or to work in a way where you could more deeply engage with the Her Film Project readership, I realize that I left you in the lurch in an ugly way. I am deeply and sincerely sorry. I regret and am embarrassed by my abrupt departure from Her Film Project last year and I hope you can forgive me.
Her Film Project is a global project to support women filmmakers, and I take full responsibility for my actions which constituted a desertion of the community and a breaking of agreements with the artists and allies within the community. I am proud and honored to know you, to work with you, and to support you. And I hope that we can continue to do so.
I hope that those of you who had frustrating or disappointing experiences regarding having your work featured on the HFP website can recognize my willingness to take responsibility for my actions which might have caused you frustration or disappointment, and to understand that I hope to move forward in a positive way. I understand that forgiveness might be a bridge too far. But if you are so inclined, you are more than welcome to join me again on this journey. I am happy to revisit agreements and to fulfill them. I hope you will join me.
It would be easy to go into self-pitying detail about the things that I felt I had to pursue or develop in my non-Her Film Project life that I allowed, or rather chose, to take me away from Her Film Project, but I’m not interested in an exercise in hubris. This post is meant to explain what happened, apologize for it, and move forward.
HFP is meant to represent you and support you, particularly when agreements have been made to do just that. When it doesn’t – when I don’t, as founder and editor of this website – then it has failed, and I have failed you.
My dream for Her Film Project, from the very early days after its creation (inspired by a champion, my friend and colleague Marian Evans of the Wellywood Woman site), has been to grow it into something meaningful, sustainable, and influential. It is still my dream to do so, and I have put in place measures to alter the way in which I “do business” with the community that Her Film Project is mean to support. I hope these changes, along with a new plan for growth, a deepening and broadening of coverage and discussion, and expansion of opportunities for women filmmakers that I will begin implementing bit by bit, will be encouraging to all of you.
I feel very much a part of this amazing community of women in film, and I look forward to continuing to work with you to move the conversation, your creations, and the community forward. Thank you for all of your support and encouragement these past five years. I can’t wait to see what the next five hold for us!
Thank you so much for reading.
